Noccalula Falls, Alabama

We drove from the Huntsville, Alabama airport to Gadsden, Alabama. It was a beautiful drive through the wooded hills of northern Alabama. Lakes were everywhere and the scenery was fantastic. After we checked in to the Holiday Inn Express, we drove up to the top of the mountain to see Noccalula Falls. The park is operated by Gadsden and is centered around a Cherokee Indian story of the Cherokee Indian princess, Noccalula. She fell in love with a young brave in her tribe but her father pledged her to another man from another tribe - all for political gain.

On the day of her wedding, Noccalula's attendants dressed her and prepared her for the wedding. She wanted a few moments of solitude and she slipped off to the edge of the 90 foot waterfall and in desperation took her life by jumping from the cliff to her death.

A sad story but a beautiful waterfall and park that commemorates her love.

Barrett and Steve ready to hike around the park, but first we need to ride the train!

Joan on the Noccalula trail.

Joan found the remains of a giant mushroom and pointed it out to Barrett.  He misunderstood and thought she said "restroom".  So any mushroom he saw from then on he would shout out "restroom!"

Noccalula Falls from the trail.  Notice the person at the bottom of the falls.

Suddenly, Barrett slowed down and left the sidewalk.  I watched as he picked some of the little flowers along the way and then rushed past me...

Barrett ran up to Joan and handed her a little flower.

On the trail, we passed by some flowers and Barrett made me go back so he could stop
and smell them.

This is the Noccalula Falls from the upper trail.

We rode the train back to the park entrance.

Barrett had fun "driving" the train.

When we returned to the hotel, Barrett wanted to call GG and Mommy and Daddy to tell them about Noccalula Falls and his airplane flight.
Joan and Barrett read a story and then Barrett got to sleep in a big bed!
Barrett was asleep very quickly.  I guess we wore him out today!  It was a fun day!!!

awww.....that is so sweet! Beautiful pictures! I had looked at most of them already when you sent them out, but they look different on the blog....and the night I looked at them in the email, I didn't have a lot of time,so looking at a few at a time gives me more time to sit and take it all in....
